Combined 1980 Music Chart

Hello again everyone. Last week when I wrote in this blog, I said that I would have a combined points chart for 1980, and this is what the subject of this entry is about. Around the turn if last year, I made two separate blog posts about the top 100 songs of 1980 based of the point system I came up with in ranking these songs; one based off the Radio & Records Charts (link above) and the other from the Billboard Hot 100. This list here is just the combined point totals of the two charts, and as you might be able to tell, there is some discrepancies between the two. For starters, the number 1 song of 1980 based on the data I got from Billboard was "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen. From the data I got from R & R was "Call Me" by Blondie. Plus, there were songs on the Billboard rankings that did not appear on the R & R charts for various reasons. Back in 1980, Radio & Records Magazine only listed the top 30 songs for the week (and did so until May of 1983). Also, back in those days, Billboard was heavily sales-based, while R & R was based off airplay from radio stations. So, who winds up on top of this combined chart? Let us find out.

Here is my list of the top 100 songs of calendar year 1980, with total points and ranking for each survey listed after each song.

...and my Number One song of 1980 is...

    1. Call Me by Blondie--2725 pts (#2 BB, #1 R/R)

A couple of things I noticed; one song that made the year end top 100 of each individual chart did not make this list ("In America" by Charlie Daniels Band). Also, there were several songs that didn't chart on R/R because of what I had mentioned earlier (only had 30 spots), but only one, "Master Blaster" by Stevie Wonder, make this chart.

So, that wraps up 1980. Next week, I should have 1981 and maybe 1982. Untiil then, later.
