1982 Top 100 (Part I--Radio & Records)

Hello again, everyone. Today marks the first of three blog posts I hope to have for you this week, which is basically a continuation of my review of pop music charts in the 1980s. I realize that I neglected to give my data based on the individual charts from 1981 like I had done with 1980 at the end of last year and start of this year. I'll get to that eventually, but for today I thought I would begin 1982 with what my data from the Radio & Records chart revealed (the process of which is explained briefly in the first linked entry). Some Things I'm Thankful For, Some Things I'm Not, Plus Other Stuff...

Hello again, everyone. With the Thanksgiving holiday now behind us, it's always a good time to celebrate what we're thankful for. In my case, there are many things, like having two loving sisters, living where it doesn't get too cold, still having working fingers to type this with, as well as having someone special in my life (love you, Sammy). That reminds me, I have to figure out what I'm getting her for Christmas...

Other things I'm thankful for include McDonald's fries, Jardiance, Prozac, NFL RedZone, and I guess Fireball, although I limit that to once a month, and NEVER with medication. Oh, and CM Punk returning to WWE...more on that in a jiffy...

However, there are other things that I (and I imagine many others) aren't as thankful for. So, I thought I would write what I'm not thankful for in this entry.

One is Elon Musk, who turned my favorite social media application into more of a cesspool of hate and division than it was before he took over as boss. Free speech on that platform? Pfft. More like hate speech full of antisemitic trolls and election deniers. Oh, and photos on X (that's another thing he did, he killed the bird and destroyed Twitter!) now show him as a guest of Benjamin Netanyahu, who in my opinion, isn't helping the current situation in the Middle East right now: hell, he's probably making it worse. But that's an entirely different topic that I may or may not discuss in a future entry. I never thought that we'd be living amongst a real-life version of Lex Luthor, but here we are.

"It's still Twitter to me, dammit!"

Another thing I'm not very thankful for is the mainstream media. CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. All three are doing or have done their part in sowing the seeds of misinformation and sometimes downright propaganda here in the United States. It's ridiculous. CNN wants to watch the world burn it seems. MSNBC wants to push an extreme left-wing narrative, and Fox wants to push an extreme right-wing narrative. And you wonder why more young people get their news from frigging TikTok? What happened to "just the facts, ma'am (man)?"

My distrust in the media began when I would listen to the local "news" station in Tampa (WFLA-AM). I quickly noticed that all their programming was decidedly right-leaning. Maybe I should have listened to NPR more often as I grew older. But when Sean Hannity is openly calling for voters to vote Republican, that's where I draw the line, because my philosophy was that news media should be unbiased and impartial. Oh, was I wrong (and probably naive). After 2016, I basically swore off terrestrial radio as result, and after now, I should swear off all news media.

Another thing, the fact that pretty much everything is a damned advertisement nowadays. You go watch a video on YouTube? You have to watch umpteen ads before you can watch, and during the video. Play a game on your phone? It's interrupted by an ad while you're playing the game, most likely for games that promise a huge payout but don't really do squat. Twixxer and Facebook? Ads intertwined between posts. Seriously, could we give it a rest? I'm now seeing those annoying car insurance ads on my phone. What's next, an ad for Rinvoc (CHECK!) or Skrizi (and that stupid jingle)?

Okay, enough ranting, let's talk about things I saw or observed over the weekend. First off, hell froze over. Honestly, I didn't really see it coming, but I kinda did because of where Survivor Series took place (Rosemont, IL). And man, some of the talent was not happy about it. In fact, I don't have footage obviously, but here is what I imagine Seth Rollins' reaction to the return of CM Punk was like.

Can't wait for Raw tonight from Nashville, 8ET on USA Network.

Oh, and how about the insane ending to the Iron Bowl on Saturday night? I guess you could say that made up for the Kick Six from Chris Davis a decade earlier. But I thought for sure Alabama was going to fall short and create potential chaos in the CFB playoff.

Then on Sunday, Jalen Hurts pulled a similar play to give Philadelphia the lead in their game against Buffalo, which he Eagles won it overtime.

By the way, is it just me, or do the Eagles Kelly green helmets and uniforms look lighter than the ones they wore from the 70s to the mid 90s?

I mean, it just looks a lot lighter nowadays than in years past, but then again, maybe kelly green wasn't available as a helmet color option even a quarter of a century ago...

Well, I may as well wrap this entry up. I have some errands to go run for my sisters. I'll be back with more later this week. Until then take care and stay warm back home!

...and the number one song of 1981 was...

    1. Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes--3157 pts (#1 BB, #1 R/R)

A few thoughts about this list. First, there was a consensus number one as "Bette Daivs Eyes" was #1 on both Billboard and Radio & Records. Not only that, but there was a consensus #2 also ("Endless Love"). In fact, I can remember as a little kid listening to "America's Top 40" with Casey Kasem and hearing that the number one song of 1981 would either be "Bette Davis Eyes" or "Endless Love." My memory sometimes astounds me. Also, there were FOUR ties in my top 100, so I may as well depict them:

*-"Leather And Lace" had 473 pts from the R/R charts, whereas "Love on The Rocks" had 469 pts from the Billboard charts, so "Leather and Lace" wins the tiebreaker.

**-"Hearts" had 634 pts from R/R, whereas "Crying" had 633 pts from Billboard.

^-"Waiting For A Girl Like You" had 1141 points from R/R, where as "Being With You" had 1065 points from Billboard

^^-"The One That You Love" had 1172 points from R/R, whereas "Private Eyes" had 1020 points also from R/R.

All of the songs on this list appeared on both charts during 1981. In fact, only one song, "It's My Turn" by Diana Ross, made the Top 100 from one chart's (BB) data without appearing on the other chart (R/R). That song wound up 127th on the list.

Also, there were a LOT of artists on the 1981 top 100 that were crossovers from country music. Including Dolly Parton's smash "9 To 5" from the movie of the same name. Other artists include Kenny Rogers, Ronnie Milsap (who was a cousin of my childhood neighbors from Orlando), Juice Newton, Oak Ridge Boys, and the late Eddie Rabbitt. Most of those artists also appear on next year's chart. Speaking of Dolly:

Kind of amazing that a 77-year old primarily country artist is almost as popular as Taylor Swift these days. Such is the state of Pop music in 2023.

Well, that wraps up my review of 1981. 1982 should be coming within the next week, along with other entries. As always, take care.

Combined 1980 Music Chart

Hello again everyone. Last week when I wrote in this blog, I said that I would have a combined points chart for 1980, and this is what the subject of this entry is about. Around the turn if last year, I made two separate blog posts about the top 100 songs of 1980 based of the point system I came up with in ranking these songs; one based off the Radio & Records Charts (link above) and the other from the Billboard Hot 100. This list here is just the combined point totals of the two charts, and as you might be able to tell, there is some discrepancies between the two. For starters, the number 1 song of 1980 based on the data I got from Billboard was "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen. From the data I got from R & R was "Call Me" by Blondie. Plus, there were songs on the Billboard rankings that did not appear on the R & R charts for various reasons. Back in 1980, Radio & Records Magazine only listed the top 30 songs for the week (and did so until May of 1983). Also, back in those days, Billboard was heavily sales-based, while R & R was based off airplay from radio stations. So, who winds up on top of this combined chart? Let us find out.

Here is my list of the top 100 songs of calendar year 1980, with total points and ranking for each survey listed after each song.

100. Whip It by Devo--460 pts (#78 BB, #118 R/R)
  99. You'll Accomp'ny Me by Bob Seger--466 pts (#106 BB, #86 R/R)
  98. Lovely One by The Jacksons--466 pts (#105 BB, #85 R/R)
  97. 99 by Toto--467 pts (#159 BB, #64 R/R)
  96. Jojo by Boz Scaggs--469 pts (#121 BB, #75 R/R)
  95. Daydream Believer by Anne Murray--478 pts (#80 BB, #107 R/R)
  94. September Morn by Neil Diamond--490 pts (#110 BB, #77 R/R)

...and my Number One song of 1980 is...

    1. Call Me by Blondie--2725 pts (#2 BB, #1 R/R)

A couple of things I noticed; one song that made the year end top 100 of each individual chart did not make this list ("In America" by Charlie Daniels Band). Also, there were several songs that didn't chart on R/R because of what I had mentioned earlier (only had 30 spots), but only one, "Master Blaster" by Stevie Wonder, make this chart.

So, that wraps up 1980. Next week, I should have 1981 and maybe 1982. Untiil then, later.

It's Been A Minute...

You know, I was doing something I ought to do more often, and that's look back on posts I've written in the past, and I was thinking (albeit somewhat delusional) how fire some of those posts were (like my Bracket-Tyner-Gy post, which I totally whiffed on), and thought to  myself, "you know, you actually do have a little bit of talent, why don't you utilize it more often?" God depression is a bitch, you don't even want to talk to people who really do care about you when it takes a hold. But you know what? I'm the only one who can change that, and with yesterday being the birthday of the USMC, why not channel some energy from America's favorite gunnery sergeant and get myself off mamby-pamby land, ya jackwagons!

"Sir, yes sir!!"

We'll start off with a "how it started vs. how it's going" as far as my picks for the 2023 NFL season are concerned, since we're now at the halfway point of the year. My Super Bowl pick is currently on track to happen, as both the Eagles and Chiefs have the best records in their respective conferences. However, the similarities end there. In the AFC, I had Buffalo winning the East, but as of right now they're out of a playoff spot (Miami currently leads the East). Baltimore leads the North, although my pick (Cincinnati) is surging after five straight wins. Jacksonville leads the South and barring a major collapse (and unexpected surge by surprising Houston) should take the division. In the NFC, Detroit is doing better than expected and is leading the North, while Minnesota is a game and a half out, but currently in Wild-Card position. San Francisco is leading the West for now, owning a tiebreaker over my pic, Seattle, while New Orleans is leading the worst South. I was right about my assessment on the Bucs; they're 3-5 and trending downwards. At this point, they may as well blow it up and do a hard reset. I don't think Todd Bowles survives past this season, even if they somehow luck out and make the playoffs (which will be like last year, with a losing record if they do). Might be time to start Kyle Trask for a few games to see if he actually has some promise. At least that is what some Buc fans on X Twitter (it'll always be Twitter to me, f*** you, Elon) are saying at this rate.

I haven't watched much news the past couple of weeks, and quite frankly, I don't think that's a bad thing. But I did notice one thing that happened this week, and that's Vivek Whatshisface putting his foot in his mouth during Wednesday night's GOP debate when he was yapping about TikTok, or more notably, who is using the app. He put his foot in his mouth by mentioning the daughter of opponent Nikki Haley. Not cool, bro. Not cool. I did hear one snippet from Chris Christie that stated that he would ban TikTok, apparently because it's a Chinese-based app that can somehow be used to spy on Americans and American interests. Let me give you my thoughts on it. I use TikTok myself, and I don't see any Chinese propaganda on there, in fact if there's any propaganda it's the same old bullshit that we've seen from the media in our country for the past decade or so, on both sides of the aisle. If you want to ban an app, why don't ban the Temu app instead? If any Chinese asset is trying to pry into our personal lives, addresses, etc., it's that one. Plus, their commercials are hella annoying, about as bad as ones for automobile insurance (looking at you, "Flo"). While we're at it, why don't we ban other things that get on my nerves, like Mistplay, the dork talking about "Atlas Earth," Jelly Roll (in fact, almost all country music; yeah, I went there), facial tats, Elon Musk, the Property Douchebros, Skyrizi commercials, and Bally Sports. Seriously, have you seen that channel lately? It's like they aren't even trying. Take issue with what I said? Well, I'm sure there are more than a few people that would like to see this blog disappear, including certain real estate agents northwest of Orlando.

Enough ranting though, let's talk about a labor of love of mine for the past several years, and that's my points system that I use for the Billboard Hot 100 and Radio & Records charts for years past. The latest project I'm doing is combining the point totals that I have tabulated from the R&R charts along with the ones from the Billboard charts. I've done eight years on Billboard so far (1980-1987), and by the end of this year, I aim to have the entire decade of the 1980's wrapped up. I think this upcoming week, I'll do 1980 to start off with. I have noticed that there are some discrepancies between the two charts as in which songs topped the year. Maybe I can include that data in the blog, so stay tuned, it'll be coming up (like a flower).

" ...like a flowerrrr!"

Today is Veterans Day, so to all who have had the privilege to serve in Armed Forces, a very hearty thank you. This former Sailor will have his old ship on his mind this week as she is cruising towards the Middle East region, because Iranian proxies are playing a game of FAFO, and rest assured it will end very, very badly for them.

you don't want any of this, Iran.

Other than that, I'll be enjoying some free grub from Chili's and Applebee's, as well as watching Florida State hopefully beat up on Miami. So, enjoy your Saturday, and I'll be back later.
