Some Deep Thoughts As A New Year Approaches

 Hello, everyone. I'm sitting here at my desk in front of my new computer on this Christmas Eve eve, and I'm pondering a lot of things going on in my life right now. Next year hopefully will be awesome on a personal level; I turn 50 in February, and in a way, that kind of sets off all sorts of alarm bells. I know the last few years of drinking (albeit sporadic to begin with) are going away. I don't know how exactly I'm going to celebrate the big 5-0. I do know it definitely won't be as lame as number 40, when I was taken to some lame-ass dinner show off 192 in Kissimmee that was hijacked by the drunk, unruly daughter of lady who concocted the idea to begin with. I don't think I've told a lot of people this because 1) it's embarrassing as fudge, and 2) I kind have been a loner throughout my life so far; I tend to enjoy own company. 

Do I plan on keeping things that way, well not exactly. I have ALWAYS wanted someone to share experiences with, and being by myself tends to get old once in a while. Fortunately, I have someone on my radar. By, the way, to tie up a loose end from my last post, no I don't think I fumbled the ball so to speak, she got her gifts and really loved them. Plus, there are more on the way (as one I got is staring at me beside my computer). However, most of the same questions that have haunted me for the majority of my adult life has been creeping into my head lately. Questions such as how does she REALLY feel about me? Am I doing too much? Am I doing anything wrong? But I also am cognizant of what she brings to the table. Won't get into any details obviously, but I have to wonder about what I bring also. I do have a heart of gold, but what more can I do, and what SHOULD I do? What I'd like to do is somehow make money with wither this platform, another blog, my future YouTube channel, or otherwise. There are a lot of things I could do. I did go to broadcasting school over a decade ago. 

Since I have a new computer that doesn't overheat when I turn it on, I wonder if I can start a YouTube Channel and produce content, but what would I talk about? Plus, how can I get eyeballs on the page? Heck, I have enough difficulty getting eyeballs on this blog, or my Facebook page, or my TwiXXer page. So, my rationale is, if nobody is really hitting those pages, why try a YouTube Channel? To which I say to myself, "fuck the self-doubt creeping in and do it. You were nominated to go to West Point for years ago for Pete's sakes, why not at least try! You'll figure it out!" Hell, life begins at 50, right?

"Do or do not, there is no try." Sorry Yoda, but sometimes you have to try in order to determine ability.

This hasn't been the best of years for me or a lot of people that I know. Personally, I lost my eldest sister back in February right around my birthday, then I lost a dear cousin over the summer. A dear friend and classmate suddenly lost his life in the spring. Other people had similar losses, a Facebook friend of mine tragically lost a daughter not too long ago in an automobile crash. The woman who I was interested in a couple of years ago lost her boyfriend this year. And I haven't even touched on the plethora of celebrities that suddenly passed away this year. Too many to count, including Bob Barker and Pee-Wee Herman. 

2024 will be interesting to say the least. The presidential election comes in November, of course, and between now and then, we'll have the primaries and the conventions. What I'll be interested to see is how the lamestream media is going to cover this. Nowadays it seems like the "news networks" are playing to the lowest common intellectual denominator, and that is pretty bad. It's either too far right or too far left, and one network is tripping over the other to see who'll have the most ridiculous headline or story. All to get that almighty ad revenue baby. Will we still be witnessing the mess in the Middle East and Ukraine's valiant efforts to hold of the "evil empire" that has been trying to take their sovereignty for a decade now. Oh, and the Paris Olympics are taking place. Let's hope it goes off as planned with no shenanigans happening.

So, as we embark on a new year in about a week, I pray that all of you who are reading this blog will have good health and good fortune for the upcoming twelve months, and beyond. Good luck to everyone...

Holiday Anxiety

 Christmas is seven days away, and I'm feeling something I haven't felt in a while: holiday anxiety. I don't think I've been under pressure, self-inflicted of course, in over a decade, when I wanted to get my daughter Kaylee a bicycle. Of course, I was practically stuck at the post office back then and she was several states away. Now she's grown and those worries are long gone. But this year is different. I have gifts for someone special and no real way to get them to her thanks to strict sisters I live with who don't like the facts that 1) she's a bartender and 2) I'm diabetic. Boomers, am I right? One gift I already bought and ready, and another two are en route, but I'm at the mercy of shipping, which at this time of year can be hit or miss as far as how timely they get here (Trust me). I have another gift for her to get, as well as gifts for my sisters to get. The current plan is to take a trip to Wally World tomorrow and get those items. Then wrap said gifts probably late at night or something. Plus, with friends coming in from Orlando coming Thursday, I'd like to wrap things up by then. 

I just hope for my sake I don't do what Trevor Lawrence did last night and drop the ball...because (and this is why my anxiety level is raised) I have a massive opportunity personally, and I want to follow through on what I've promised.

1983 Top 100 (Part I--Radio & Records)

 Well, here we go again. Today, I'm going to start my summation of the year 1983, beginning with my 100 top songs based on data from Radio & Records Magazine. Now it's important to note that beginning the week ending Jume 10, 1983, Radio & Records went from a thirty-place chart to forty. Doesn't matter a whole lot in the entire scheme of things (except for two songs I'll talk about below) as positions 31-40 only had point totals of ten to one, with a maximum bonus point allotment of ten (for songs that went above 15 weeks on the chart). The point totals are explained here, in case you needed a refresher. Here now are my top 100 from R/R for calendar year 1983.

There were nine ties on this chart, but none more convoluted than at 15/16. Both "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" and "Separate Ways" had 819 points, so we went to the first tiebreaker for songs that reached the Top 20, which was peak position. Both songs reached #1, so the next tiebreaker was weeks at number one. Both songs stayed at #1 for two weeks. Next tiebreaker was weeks in the top 10. Both had seven. Next was weeks in the top 20. Both had 11 weeks. Next tiebreaker was total weeks on the chart, and incredibly, both had 12 weeks. So, to break the tie, I finally had to go to weeks within the top three, and "Separate Ways" spent four weeks in the Top 3 while "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" spent three. So Journey wound up at #15. Remember in m opening paragraph about the chart going from 30 to 40? Since both songs debuted in the first half of 1983, I think if the chart back then had 40 positions instead of 30, it would have helped a lot.

Remarkably, this is probably the only time in the forty years of data that I use from Radio & Records/Mediabase (1980-2019) that a tiebreaker had gone THAT far. I'm still working on data from Billboard, and as what we found out this week, that will be something altogether weird as I go later in the years. Next up will be my top 100 based off Billboards data, then the combined chart. Until then have a wonderful Thursday, and Happy Hannukah to all who celebrate.

Florida State: Grotesque Snub, Or Payback?

 Hello everyone. As most of you are aware by now Florida State was inexplicably left out of the college football playoff, despite winning the ACC Championship game over a top-15 Louisville team (who may have been top-10 had they not lost at home to Kentucky the week earlier) and going undefeated in the regular season. All this while having their star quarterback and playmaker, Jordan Travis, out for the season with a leg injury, and having their backup out for their game against Louisville due to concussion protocol. Instead, the Seminoles will now face Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

On the surface, there appears to be much outrage from FSU fans and non-FSU fans about them being overlooked. However, there could be reason for why they were left out, and it isn't what many people think. Who airs the CFP? ESPN. The same entity that is the reason that there are so damn many college bowl games to begin with. Who is ESPN owned by? The Walt Disney Corporation. Who has Disney been at odds with for the past few years? None other than Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Now, I'm not sure whether or not DeSantis is a Seminoles fan (nor do I care), but isn't at least somewhat interesting that Disney decided to stick it to DeSantis by leaving off Florida State from the college football playoff? I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Some interesting footnotes I found from this list: "Gloria" was a hot seller, but didn't get much love from radio for one reason or another (17th on Billboard yet 78th on Radio & Records). I mentioned the other day that only four songs reached the top ten on each chart that made the top ten on the combined chart. Well, I mis-wrote; it was five. In fact the top 20 on the combined chart was relatively tame, no song was outside the top 50 of any individual chart:
